The song is a turbulent look at the end of a toxic relationship. In true story teller fashion Daniel creates conversations between characters within the song. The use of an impartial character who can offer insights and ask "awkward" questions to the singer is a brave step for someone who feels they have been wronged. His references to love are at times cynical and flippant which ironically only emphasise the pain expressed. Daniel has kept a theme of struggle and redemption through much of the material in his career and Runaway Train is no exception. Despite the narrative which is full of hurt and regret there is still the understanding of breaking through to a better place (something which anyone who has suffered a broken heart in an abusive relationship will find hard to imagine). There is an overall sense that despite the trauma, there is still living to be done and that the concept of the Runaway Train is that he is getting the hell out of Dodge as quickly as possible, and has resolved to never go back to what he is escaping from.
