Ashen Horde Unveils New Black/Death EP “Decayed” in Celebration of 10th Anniversary

Progressive extreme metal band Ashen Horde is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its debut album with a brand-new EP! Decayed, which features four new songs that tie back to the band’s previous four albums, will be available on limited 10” clear vinyl, cd and digital. Along with the four new recordings, the cd will feature 12 additional songs, compiling the band’s original, nonalbum material released from 2015-2021. The EP is currently available for preorder at

Lead single, “The Reaping,” serves as a mini-sequel to the 2015 album Nine Plagues.
It picks up many years after the album, and looks at one descendent of the people onto whom the plagues (detailed on the album) fell. Due to the belief that their ancestors were cursed, the bloodline has been viewed as lesser, and all members of it have been treated as useless dregs. But one among them is done being trod upon, and vows to break the curse by taking vengeance on all who have treated them as less. The song juxtaposes blast-beat driven sections with melodic passages; brutally harsh vocals with majestic clean sections; in other words, quintessential Ashen Horde.

Formed by guitarist/vocalist Trevor Portz in 2013, Ashen Horde was created to be an extreme metal band that refuses to be bound by any one genre, instead embracing elements from across the extreme metal (and even rock) spectrum. Originally a one-man band, Ashen Horde has expanded to include a full lineup, including renowned drummer Robin Stone, bassist Igor Panasewicz, and new vocalist Karl Chamberlain. Chamberlain, who makes his debut on this EP, replaced long-time vocalist Stevie Boiser, who is currently fronting tech death stalwarts Inferi.

The band’s most recent full length, Antimony, was released in 2023 by Transcending Obscurity Records, and received much critical acclaim for its diversity and complexity. As noted by Everything Is Noise, “grungy, technical, blackened, progressive, doomy, melodic, atmospheric – many adjectives describe Antimony…” The band is currently at work on the follow up, which promises to follow the same path of genre-blending extremity.

Though the band have not performed due to the fact that they live all over the globe, discussions are in the works to finally bring Ashen Horde to the stage. Portz, having recently completed a tour with his band Abhoria, is keen to at long last do some Ashen Horde dates in the near future.
