IATT – Descent Into the Etheric Realms: An Exclusive Interview on The Zach Moonshine Show
Philadelphia’s extreme metal visionaries IATT are back, and they’re doing more than just releasing an album. Their latest full-length, Etheric Realms of the Night , is an audacious statement—a cinematic, blackened-prog journey that fuses chaos, orchestration, and storytelling into a sensory assault that will leave listeners breathless. I caught up with the band on The Zach Moonshine Show to dissect the album, explore their evolution, and peek behind the curtain of their near-20-year-long career.
From the Myspace Era to Modern Madness
Formed in 2008, IATT has always thrived on ambition. “We started in the Myspace era, putting ourselves out there and building from scratch,” says the band, recalling the early days of posting Craigslist ads and recording demos at Roughhouse Records with a then-up-and-coming Grammy-winning producer. Over the years, the band evolved from a fledgling extreme act into a unit with deep chemistry, capable of blending multiple musical worlds.
“We’ve always been dreamers,” they explain. “We push boundaries and swing for the fences with everything we do. If we’re going to do it, we do it because we love it.”
That love is evident in Etheric Realms of the Night , which is more than just an album. It’s a full-length cinematic experience. Each track is tied into a larger narrative that draws from Greek tragedy, dreamscapes, and astral projection. The band acts as a Greek chorus, weaving lyrics and musical storytelling into an immersive journey through the shadow self and beyond the veil of sleep.
Crafting Chaos and Cinematic Metal
One of the album’s most striking elements is its orchestral and progressive touch. “We worked with Deidre Mallory from Gong on flute,” the band shares. “It’s part of the cinematic layer that elevates the intensity beyond typical blackened metal.” From Spanish guitar flourishes to haunting flutes and blistering blast sections, the band’s composition is a masterclass in dynamic extremes.
But this is not just a studio exercise. IATT thrives as a live, cohesive unit. With members contributing classical, jazz, and metal influences, the band’s chemistry translates into performances that feel both precise and explosive. “We’re so locked into each other at this point that the writing process and performing on stage feels effortless,” they explain.
The Name, The Logo, The Alchemy
Ever wondered about the enigmatic name IATT? Originally I Am The Trireme , the band drew inspiration from ancient Greek warships—fast, crushing, and relentless. As pronunciation proved tricky, the abbreviation evolved into IATT, now a standalone identity.
Their logo, designed by guitarist Alec, draws from alchemy and the chemical symbol for arsenic, reflecting themes explored across their discography. “We love embedding hidden meanings and sigils in our artwork,” the band says. “It’s a way of letting the fans dive deeper into our world, if they’re willing.”
Gearheads, Take Note
IATT also shared insight into their arsenal:
Guitars: Strandberg headless guitars, Chapman guitars
Bass: Dingwall D Rock 5-string, Super P5
Amps & Cabs: Mesa, Orange, Line 6 with Celestian speakers
Drums & Percussion: Tama drums, custom Slackliners, Altama hardware
Pedals & DSP: Neural DSP Quad Cortex, custom pedals
Mics: Telefunken
It’s a lineup designed for both precision and brutality, allowing them to execute the complex compositions that define their sound.
Looking Forward: Tours, Festivals, and More
While Etheric Realms of the Night marks a high point in IATT’s career, the band is far from resting on laurels. Upcoming shows include opening spots for Demon King tours, a festival appearance at Brimming Horn Meadery’s Viking-inspired 793 Pre-Raid Fest , and more. With new singles, videos, and a full album film on the horizon, the band is inviting fans into a fully realized world of darkness, narrative, and chaos.
“We’ve always been fans first of our own music,” the band says. “We try to write what we want to hear, and that passion drives everything we do. We want our audience to feel the same immersion and excitement.”
Embrace the Darkness
IATT is not content with being background noise. From their orchestral flourishes to their progressive blackened aggression, they’re creating an experience that’s cinematic, unhinged, and undeniably extreme. For fans of metal that challenges, captivates, and overwhelms, Etheric Realms of the Night is mandatory listening.
Turn it up, step beyond the veil, and embrace the darkness.
