Do you remember Creepypasta? These short horror stories took the internet by storm in the early 2010s, giving rise to iconic characters such as Jeff the KIller and Slenderman. If you were around for the peak era for CreepyPasta (around 2011-2014) you’ll remember that one of the most popular themes for CreepyPastas was video games.
Video game CreepyPastas come in many forms, from twisted nostalgia based horrors to original creations. Here are just a few of the best video game CreepyPastas the internet has to offer
Mr.Mix
Mr.Mix tells the story of a educational children’s typing game from the 1990s that had been lost to time, The game involving a chef character named Mr.MIx who will react to missed words and offer encouragement when they child types the combination of letters correctly. Legend has it this game was so difficult to beat that it causes computers to crash and burn out, the game asking players to type over 100 words per minute in the later levels of the game
After finding an old CD from a copy of Mr. Mix by chance, a group of hackers decide to go through the code of the game to find out what would happen if you reach the mysterious final levels. The levels become more and more horrifying until they reach the final level.
The final level contained something so unspeakable that it was not even recorded. It had such intense negative psychological effects on the hackers that they descended into madness. They part ways, never to speak to each other again. Every single hacker declined to comment on what they saw in that final level.
Years later, a man that was later identified as one of the hackers who worked on decoding the game was arrested for trying to kidnap an eight year old girl in a grocery store.
At the time of his arrest, the hacker was wearing a white chef’s hat. He had a crazed look in his eyes and was clearly extremely mentally unstable. When interrogated by police, he refused to say anything except “I am Mr.Mix”
What became of that hacker after that is unknown.
Lavender Town
Lavender Town is a CreepyPasta based on a long running internet urban legend revolving the Pokemon games
Lavender Town is a location in Pokemon Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, and sequels Gold, Silver Crystal DS games rumored to be home to the Lavender Tower, a burial ground for dead Pokemon. The legend states that around a hundred Japanese children age ten to fifteen had begun attempting and committing suicide while they reach Lavender Town in the Pokemon DS game in a phenom known as “Lavender Sydrome”
When investigated further it is believed that the children’s suicidal behaviors or “Lavender Sydrome” is caused by a certain song that plays as the player enters Lavender Town in the Pokemon game. The sound is said to be so awful and irritating that it causes immense psychological damage in children, causing self destructive and even suicidal behavior
The origin of the sound that causes Lavender Syndrome or what makes it so psychologically damaging to children remains completely unknown.
Glitchy Red
Another iconic CreepyPasta based around the Pokemon games including Pokemon Go accounts , Glitchy red is an internet urban legend about a glitched version of the main protagonist of the Pokemon franchise, Ash Ketchum.
According to the urban Legend, Glitch Red was once a completely playable character. It is unknown whether he was just an alternate colored variation of the original Ash Ketchum or a different character entirely. For some unknown reason,Glitchy Red was deleted from the entirety of the Pokemon franchise. He refused to die, however and he now haunts the Pokemon games as a sort of vengeful spirit.
MARIO
Based on the immensely popular Super Mario games, this iconic gaming creepypasta tells the story of a man named Adam who downloads an old Super Mario World CD rom that had hidden away in a strange box he had purchased from a yard sale onto his computer. The game disk had “find me’ scribbled all over it in barely readable writing, which only intrigued Adam more.
As Adam plays through the game, he notices strange things starting to happen that were not normal for the Super Mario World games. Bubbles of texts started popping up saying things that suggested Mario was the villain rather than the hero. Then disturbing texts mentioning things like removing the victims eyes. Eventually the game glitches to the point of becoming unplayable The game then downloads a file onto his computer. When Adam opens the file, he finds a mysterious JPEG image. When he clicks on it, he finds a disturbing, hyper realistic image of Mario with his eyes missing, just like what was described in the video game.
