NILE Unleashes Ferocious New Single “Chapter for Not Being Hung Upside Down on a Stake in the Underworld and Made to Eat Feces by the Four Apes”
World-renowned American death metal icons NILE are back in 2024 with their highly-anticipated 10th album, The Underworld Awaits Us All, set for release on August 23 via Napalm Records. In celebration of this announcement, NILE has unveiled the album’s first single, "Chapter for Not Being Hung Upside Down on a Stake in the Underworld and Made to Eat Feces by the Four Apes," accompanied by a gripping official music video.
This new track is a testament to NILE's mastery of brutal technical death metal, blending killer screams and gutturals with intricate riffs and relentless drumming. The song draws inspiration from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, specifically its 181st chapter, and showcases the band’s unique ability to infuse their music with Egyptological themes.
NILE’s latest opus, The Underworld Awaits Us All, highlights the extreme talents of each band member: founding mastermind/guitarist Karl Sanders, drum virtuoso George Kollias, vocalists/guitarists Brian Kingsland and Zach Jeter, and bassist Dan Vadim Von. Produced and recorded at Sanders’ own Serpent Headed Studios in Greenville, South Carolina, the album benefits from the expert mixing and mastering of Vile Nilotic Rites engineer Mark Lewis (known for his work with Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus, and Whitechapel).
The album art, created by Michał 'Xaay' Loranc, ties in seamlessly with the band’s thematic focus on the cycle of life and judgment at its end. This visual representation complements the auditory assault delivered by the album’s tracks, each of which pushes the boundaries of NILE’s technical prowess and artistic expression.
Opening with “Stelae of Vultures,” the album sets a fierce tone with dissonant guitar chords and supernatural drumming, paving the way for the chaos that follows. The single “Chapter for Not Being Hung Upside Down on a Stake in the Underworld and Made to Eat Feces by the Four Apes” serves as a brutal centerpiece, while tracks like “To Strike with Secret Fang” blend low-end punishment with blackened death metal influences.
Standout tracks such as “Naqada II Enter the Golden Age” and “Overlords of the Black Earth” introduce thrash and fusion elements, as well as real human choirs, adding new dimensions to NILE’s sound. The album’s pinnacle burner, “Under the Curse of the One God,” combines sinister atmospherics with breakneck pacing and vicious riff acrobatics, showcasing Kollias’s extreme drumming and razor-sharp soloing from all three guitarists.
With 11 pummeling tracks and intricate interludes, The Underworld Awaits Us All proves that NILE remains at the forefront of extreme metal, even after 30 years. This album is a technical tour-de-force, blending full-tilt speed and ferocious musicality, and solidifies NILE’s position as a band that continues to bleed metal for their fans as long as the sands of time allow.
