Today, doom-death titans Mourners Lament stream the entirety of their band's highly anticipated second album, A Grey Farewell, at the 666MrDoom YouTube channel . Formed in 2004, Mourners Lament are a doom-death metal band hailing from Viña del Mar, Chile. During their first years, they released a demo in 2004 and then an EP, Unbroken Solemnity, in 2008. Those two recordings launched the quintet onto numerous gigs within the Chilean doom scene, some of them with classic bands like Poema Arcanus and Mar de Grises.

Lineup changes followed during the next handful of years, as Mourners Lament underwent a minor period of silence while preparing what would be their debut album. Titled We All Be Given, the band's first full-length would first be released in 2016 by esteemed national label Canometal Records, and then later the next year internationally through Hammerheart Records. Between the two editions, Mourners Lament established themselves as a considerable new(er) name in the wider doom-death scene.

After the debut album's initial release, Mourners Lament continued playing live shows in their native Chile, climbing to a higher position in the national doom scene. Later on, two new members took over drums and vocal duties, and a new lineup was established in 2019, which continues to this day. This new-look Mourners Lament brought fresh sounds and spirit to the band, resulting in the new EP Grieving at a Distance in 2022 and their first adventure in European territory that same year.

After the Euro tour, which included an appearance at the renowned Dutch Doom Days festival, the band started the process of a new album. At last here, A Grey Farewell easily eclipses its not-inconsiderable full-length predecessor. Here, Mourners Lament erect a towering monument to misery: six songs in nearly 65 minutes, the album is an emotional and DARK journey across a majestic & melancholic landscape. Undoubtedly, it's pure DOOM-DEATH by definition - riffs crush and then reverberate, rhythms lumber before nearly disappearing into darkness, guttural vocals either meld with both or play counterpart, and icy, almost-sensual synths flow with subtlety and a quiet power - but Mourners Lament prove to be masterful songwriters, patiently building arcs that unfold dark drama and bittersweet emotion, and then seamlessly threading the whole experience together as one unified work that's equally spacious and suffocating. That there's a bit more polish here only makes A Grey Farewell that much better, particularly given the band's penchant for dynamic quietude.

The raw-yet-rich emotion of the earliest days of the Peaceville Three - Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, and Anathema, altogether THE eternal template for doom-death metal - can still be a fertile field for inspiration. It would not be hyperbole to suggest that A Grey Farewell is perhaps one of the best modern examples of pure doom-death that imparts its own personality. Some 20 years after their formation, Mourners Lament have truly arrived!

The band wanted to create the foundation of a death metal act crossing other influences like doom and some psychedelic vibes, to illustrate soundscapes of disastrous, catastrophic, and annihilating volcanic and natural events. There are not many artists actually singing about this specific topic, if any, and therefore, the lyrical content is also something to explore. As such, the moniker Phenocryst is fitting.

That debut EP, aptly titled Explosions, was released by Blood Harvest in late 2021 to international acclaim. Across its 23-minute runtime, Phenocryst unsettled with preternatural ease, reeking of death stench and obscure delirium. It was a noble foundation, to be sure, and one that allowed for further liberation of the rich language of death metal.

Speaking more confidently and boldly than ever and armed with a reconfigured lineup, Phenocryst at last deliver their debut album in Cremation Pyre. Another aptly titled record, Cremation Pyre indeed sonically approximates its namesake: somber yet furious, coiling with both inexorable dread and steely-eyed austerity, portentous and spacious in equal measure, and of course MOLTEN. Upon first blush, Phenocryst's debut full-length is perhaps purer death metal than its short-length predecessor; riffs are hulking and heaving, with a clearer production imparting a gleaming tank-like sound not unlike mid '90s Bolt Thrower. But even within this seemingly more "standard" carapace, odd & adroit sensations get malformed into miasmic shapes, and what seems like a no-less-awesome iteration of gleaming meat & potatoes DEATH METAL soon starts sliding and slipstreaming into a vortex of cosmic ash as the second half of the album begins to dig in its supernatural claws and frightening spaciousness opens up. And that's to say nothing of the subtly reverberating-into-the-abyss bits of melody dotting this sooty landscape...

Forward-thinking traditionalism? Perhaps, but the real beauty of Cremation Pyre is that it's open to myriad interpretations; one only need step into its lava. Phenocryst prove, once again, that Only Death is Realer!

The lines between The Skull and Legions of Doom blur intriguingly on The Skull 3. This debut from Legions of Doom, emerging from the shadow of the late Eric Wagner, is both a tribute and a fresh chapter in doom metal's storied lineage.

Following Wagner's passing in 2021, his presence looms large over the project. As recounted by Ron Holzner, former Trouble bassist and close friend of Wagner, the album is built on material intended for The Skull's third record. With Wagner's lyrics and some vocals, Legions of Doom encapsulates a poignant farewell and celebration of his legacy. The album features an impressive lineup, including guitarist Lothar Keller, drummer Henry Vasquez (Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Blood of The Sun), guitarist Scott Little (Leadfoot), and vocalists Karl Agell (Lie Heavy, Leadfoot, Blind-era Corrosion of Conformity) and Scott Reagers (original frontman of Saint Vitus).

The album kicks off with "Beyond the Shadow of Doubt," a track that sets a somber yet uplifting tone. The doom-laden riffs and haunting vocals are a testament to the genre's core while introducing a rejuvenated spirit. "All Good Things," the album's lead single, is a standout track that blends Wagner's lyrics with Agell's emotive delivery. It’s a poignant reflection on hope and redemption, resonating deeply as a posthumous collaboration with Wagner.

"Lost Soul" showcases the combined songwriting talents of Holzner, Keller, and Vasquez, with a raw and powerful composition that speaks to the band's grief and resilience. The instrumental prowess is evident throughout the album, particularly in "Between Darkness and Dawn," where the interplay between guitars and rhythm section creates an immersive, almost meditative experience.

"Heaven," featuring Wagner's vocals, is perhaps the most emotionally charged track on the album. Reworked from an acoustic demo, it stands as a touching tribute to Wagner's enduring influence. The closing track, "Hallow By All Means," is an epic nine-minute journey that encapsulates the album's themes of loss, rebirth, and the relentless march of time.

The album's production, helmed by the band and featuring cover art by David V. D’Andrea, captures the essence of doom metal while injecting a modern vibrancy. The sound is heavy, dark, and atmospheric, perfectly complementing the lyrical content.

How would you feel if, during the night, while you’re lying on your bed, something touches you in the dark? The air grows cold, their eyes emerge from darkness, and you feel your body tense. The shivers begin, shocked by horror, possessed by unholy force – you cannot escape from this hell. Now evil breaks loose and you’re under a Demon Spell!

Such is the sonic sensation of Demon Spell’s debut mini-album, Evil Nights. The Italian quartet may be name in name, but their sound is most definitely OLD. Among that lineup are such veterans as drummer Dario Casabona, who played with Italy’s legendary Schizo for 20 years, and guitarist Francesco Bauso, who was a founding member stoner-doom titans Haunted. Along with vocalist Federico Fano and bassist Riccardo Liberti, Demon Spell bring forth HORROR and EVIL in purest ‘80s heavy metal form: obsessed maniacs who were born under the sign of the moon during terrifying nightmares and morbid rituals. Of course, we could also invoke such names as ‘80s Satan’s Host, Witch Cross, and even the almighty Death SS, but on evidence of the four songs presented here, Demon Spell are already on their way in stirring up a bewitching cauldron of nocturnal delights. Brace yourselves for an auditory bloodbath as Heinous Exsanguination releases their first single “Severed Limbs, Mangled Remains”, off their upcoming EP “The Stench of Decaying Flesh”. Featuring a ferocious guest appearance by Richard Smihula of Desoectomy, this track is inspired by the graphic aftermath of conflict and disaster, horror, human suffering, and the enduring impact of violence. And also severed body parts. The band comments:

“This will be the next single released from the upcoming EP. This is a fast and relentless track, starting with chaotic blasts leading into a groovy slam section with no breaks to be found. The song then speeds up again before culminating in a vocal feature by Richard Smihula of Descoectomy. Richard brings some amazing gutturals to end the track in a brutal and uneasy manner.”

This song was heavily inspired by slam royalty, Vasculitis. At the time of writing this album, songwriter Mitchell Christian was heavily into Vasculitis. Expect everything you would want from a slam band -blasts, breakdowns, slams, slow-downs. This track really shows the ability of Christian and vocalist JP to create parts that really blend together. JP’s vocals fuse into the track to become another instrument.

Driven by relentless brutality and spine-chilling intensity, "Severed Limbs, Mangled Remains" is a testament to Heinous Exsanguination's dedication to creating the most punishing death metal possible. They are recommended for fans of Embryectomy, Kraanium, and Parasitic Ejaculation.

“‘The song "Medusa's Death" is based on the myth of Perseus and Medusa. Medusa is one of the three Gorgons who is often associated with death, with fear. In the song, the moment before her death at the hands of Perseus is described in a bloody and gruesome way. The deliberate choice of this myth is because she represents horror, the other side of beauty that fascinates and repels, seduces and kills. The female gaze, usually a source of seduction, in Medusa becomes a source of instant death, turning anyone who looks at her into solid stone."

BIOGRAPHY:
The Kreyl project was born during the winter of 2020, in the city of Barcelona (Catalunya/Spain), from an idea of Virus Tremor, guitarist of the band and also guitarist of the black metal band Nefasta and the brutal death metal band Handle with Hate. It was inspired by the album ‘I’ by the Finnish black metal band Hedonihil and many other bands of the second wave of black metal. Later on the Kreyl project was joined by: Croma Lan Ro as drummer, also drummer of the black metal band Fogos; Necrum Nebulas as bass player and already a member of the brutal death bands Caustic and Handle with Hate; I. Luna as guitarist, already member of the brutal death band
Caustic and Eris Nocturna Aura on vocals, already singer in the black metal band Nefasta and mastermind of the dark ambient solo project Aetheria (Italy).

Kreyl's idea is to move away from the usual themes centred on Satan and Anti-Christianity and to focus more on historical-cultural themes closely related to the concept of death, occultism, ancient civilizations, exalting also the most raw, violent and brutal local mythology and paganism from a philosophical and dark point of view.

BalashToth, the solo project of former Casketgarden guitarist Balazs Toth, is set to unleash their debut EP titled "=Equation=" on September 26, 2024. BalashToth's music is a fusion of old-school melodic death metal and thrash influences, drawing comparisons to bands like At The Gates, Dimension Zero, and Carcass.

The concept behind "=Equation=" draws inspiration from the "anti-life equation," a concept introduced by DC Comics, symbolizing a formula that can strip away one's free will. Each track on the EP reflects a different facet of this concept, exploring themes that resonate with contemporary political struggles. From folk music-infused melodies to relentless death/thrash assaults, "=Equation=" promises a diverse and powerful musical journey.

Balazs Toth, based in Ireland since 2012, has honed his music production and mixing skills, steering BalashToth's musical direction with a DIY ethos. The project originated from Toth's guitar-focused YouTube channel, which evolved into a platform for original compositions after collaborating with featured singer "Deathmetalvoicer" from Japan.

"=Equation=" follows the success of BalashToth's previous EP "Anti-Life" released in Fall 2023, which garnered critical acclaim and was recognized among the Top 3 best Irish metal EPs of the year by Burning Metal IRL. Building on this momentum, the project released the single "Impossible Exercise" in early 2024, a testament to Toth's dedication to riff-driven metal excellence.
