For nearly 20 years now, Iron Curtain have been stalwart defenders of the faith. With a discography that includes four full-lengths and twice as many EPs, splits, and demos, Iron Curtain’s ever-sturdy sound was forged in the fires of the early ‘80s: largely nodding to the eternal Motörhead as well as Tank, but also Canadian gods like Exciter and Razor, to the Teutonic might of early Iron Angel and Grave Digger, to Scandinavian gods OZ and Heavy Load, to cult American icons Abattoir and Savage Grace, and the shores of Britannia with the likes of Diamond Head, Raven, and Girlschool. And with the Dying Victims release of career highpoint Danger Zone in 2019, that sound’s become even more rocking than ever.

After a quick-hitting mini-album (again through Dying Victims) titled Metal Gladiator whereby the band presented the new alongside re-recordings of the old, Iron Curtain return to assume their throne with Savage Dawn. Doubtlessly (and vividly!) displayed by its photographic cover art courtesy of Daniel Rabandan, Savage Dawn is indeed a new dawn for Iron Curtain: a concerted return to their rough-hewn roots, only spit-shined with the gleaming chrome that’s come to define them in recent years. Thus does Savage Dawn exhibit a unique dichotomy: their ancient metal’s more juiced-up than ever, but the craggy edges come through in the content while the form is powerfully professional – “slick” only in the very best sense, with mixing by the esteemed Javi Félez (Teitanblood, Destroyer 666, Graveyard) and mastering by the equally esteemed Jaime Gómez Arellano (Ghost, Satan, Mayhem) providing that punch. As such, across these ten new tracks (anthemically presaged by “Rattlesnake” on Metal Gladiator, as vintage four-piece Motörheaded as it comes) do we hear Iron Curtain throw the likes of classic Riot, Jaguar, and Running Wild into their by-now-characteristic blender, with leads and melodies more soaring than ever.

LA-based rock singer-songwriter JOHN DEMENA has released a live video for "I the People", the opening track from his 2023 album "Dreams and Lies". The footage for the clip was filmed during the band’s 2023  performance at the iconic Viper Room in West Hollywood (California). “Dreams and Lies” was released in the Spring of 2023 featuring the singles "Eternal Eyes" and "Dreams and Lies", which combined, earned the Los Angeles rocker 8 international film awards and over a dozen nominations at film festivals such as the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, the Girona Film Festival, and the Santiago Horror Film Festival. “I the People”, the song that opens the album, was also included in Loudwire’s Weekly Wire playlist as one of the Best 50 Rock & Metal  Songs of the week it was released. Commenting on this song, DeMena says: “I wanted this song to start with  this epic and hypnotic sonic universe, where the intensity and tension would build until exploding into a visceral, energetic riff. It’s how I wanted to present myself and my music to the world as the opening track of my debut  album. It is also the song I open concerts with and my favorite to play live because the riff and the solo are pure dynamite."

Malce for me has always been synonymous with upset, because I have always associated this name with an Italian erotic film of the 80s: not so much for having seen it indoors, but because, since then more or less innocent neven, I had come across his trailer by chance an afternoon, since then in the "Cinema Trip" were cheerfully mixed with GremlinsKarate Kid, as Creepshow with this Malombrnovel.Less out of the homonymous band that, however, like that film a little 'benevel, moves me into strange and indecipherable mechanisms.

The MALOMBRA, we said, that after more than twenty years from the previous 'The Dissolution Age' return with an unpublished record, the here present 'T.R.E.S', published by the most holy and divine Black Widow of Genoa, true tutelary for a certain type of dismal and obscure sounds; indeed I should say they return, since the record was already composed of the series.Revisited in today’s form so that our ears may drink with such majestic sound mystery.

The album is as much a tribute to the Italian Progressive as to a certain type of Heavy rock that explores the evil and mysterious side (a term used by the band that I find beautiful to express their particular musical research) of the dark sound of seminal bands such as Candlemass, Black Widow or Danzig.

It goes without saying that the sung in Italian, emphatic and theatrical of the immense Mercy, is absolutely (exceptional) functional in accentuating the deep darkness of the pieces, each of which is a long ride in the blackest night: the band takes its time in exploring every little musical raving to bring out the right atmosphere in a continuous tension that, like a cold chill that runs along the backAstarte Syriaca.Baccanalia" ") )

Introduced that an evil melody that seems almost a song of sirene, as could have been able to conceive Paul Williams at the time of the "Ghost of the stage", comes "Mumombra", which is a Gothic tale in music that would be reductive to bring closer to a mere soundtrack for some elusive fear of fear, so the song is dense and stratified. I would advise to listen to him in the dark, at night, alone, in order to sink into what is a real sensory experience of a higher level.

The record is never immediate, trivial, certainly not suitable for those who are distracted, because it requires and deserves concentration in listening; nor is the ambiguous and bewitching example "Ipnagogic hallucination", a real trip made with open eyes that, for an absurd short circuit, has reminded me of what Federico Fiumani did with his Diaframma.

We are only halfway, but the beauty has yet to come, because the band has in store for us "Recio Gaia 666", a real black heart of the album, a song of over seventeen minutes that is itself a disc in the disco, a suite in which everything happens, but in which everything has a very specific meaning, nothing is left to chaos, nothing to chance: every second is a necessary tile to build the black mosaic that we will find in front of the piece. Standing ovation.

There is so much Doom in the next "Mhostingian 1914", but not only, because the progressive evolution that takes place in the chorus has made me stand up: "That we are but dead that toast / that will never be detach from the notes of the forgotten plane / on which you make a poutri of motifs that rub", pure poetry.

We have come to the end and all that remains is "The Sola Immanenza", almost a brief farewell that catches me unprepared and unable to move away, as if I had just begun a journey that must already end, short as all beautiful things, short as life. But it is right that it is so and then all that remains is to go, get lost in the mist and disappear into the darkness.

A real-hearted applause to the musicians who helped to create this sound: Matteo Ricci, Fabio Cuomo and Giulio Gaietto, who concerted together with Mercy the realization of this black pearl that I highly recommend to those who want to go to music.

Here they are again, the masters of progressive and highly Italian metal with the shot Gothic. MALOMBRA actually complete the work that was to become their master exam after more than 25 years. The Italians tear "T.R.E.S. - from the mouth of the time continuum, drag it from 1994 into the contemporary chaos of the year 2023.

Of course, 'T.R.E.S' corresponds to the word "three" and should have become the third publication of MALOMBRA. But everything turned out differently, for twenty years the fate of the band seemed to be sealed, while the grass began to grow over history.

However, singer Mercy did not let up, at least tried to involve old band members in the recordings at least mentally or over the distance and finally recorded "T.R.E.S with guitarist/bassist Matteo, who was already present in the 1990s, and the drummers Fabio Cuomo and Giulio Gaietto.

This acronym 'T.R.E.S' already appeared in the booklet of the 1996 work "Our Lady Of The Bones". TRES was also the nickname of an enigmatic secret society, the sect of all sects, and was in Umberto Eco's novel for "Templi Resurgentes Equites Synarchici".

The foundation for the screenplay by MALOMBRA.

The seven minutes of 'Astarte Syriaca': Suddenly, a drum set rolls over the listener like thundercrokes. Then the rhythm department as a whole beats the darkness through the room, while the keys emit their horrosque tones when the spiral staircase entered. Mercy sings and recites his text stoically over everything, but suddenly he walks up with the vibrations.

Then the nine minutes of Bacchanalia: For the dark Orgel sound, Mercy presents his text. The rhythm is hammering, the chant ever faster and more hectic until it strives towards the light singing. This is followed by the twelve minutes once tested live by 'Malombra': piano keys of the shudder between a ghostly atmosphere form the foundation for the scene in which the drums consist of the battle, the guitar takes on her morbid melody and Mercy lives out.

The five minutes of 'Allucinazione Ipnagogica': airy sneak over the roofs in the darkness. The seventeen minutes of 'Cerchio Gaia 666' follows on: the mood is determined by the mystical synthesizer and organ sounds. The dance and singing on the rope begins, the fanfares seem to seal the fate.

The rest of seven minutes of 'Fantasmagoria 1914': they wander through the night of evil, although singing and melody sound almost happily. The last three minutes of La Sola Immanenza: The instruments list the final dance interludes, for the midnight exit walkways. Mercy speaks his last words to the bell sound.

        It may have been mid-pandemic when Spillage last graced us with a studio album, but now the Chicago doomsters are back with their latest album ‘Phase Four’. Once again, Spillage focus their energy on a heavy metal or rock sound which has that 70’s sound merging with the classic doom sound of the mid-80’s. If you’re the sort of person who likes Hammond organ galore mixed with Dio-esque vocals against the riffage that wouldn’t be out of place with Black Sabbath, then what you get here is a fantastic album which can be played over and over again. In 2013, SPILLAGE was born from a vision of guitarist Tony Spillman. Initially conceived as a musical "project", SPILLAGE developed into a solid riff-rock band, with its roots firmly planted in hard-rock, blues, jazz and other musical influences inherent in its members. SPILLAGE band members have known each other for the most part, since childhood playing in various bands in the Chicago suburbs for nearly 40 years. Tony Spillman had been touring with Earthen Grave for 5 years when Earthen Grave disbanded in 2013. Tony decided to fully focus on bringing his vision to life, creating SPILLAGE with drummer Chris Martins in April 2013. Drawing from songs written by Tony in his younger days, SPILLAGE released their debut album "Spillage" featuring Lothar Keller ( The Skull, Sacred Dawn ) on vocals, Nick Bozidarevic on guitar, Willie Max ( Mudfish ) on bass and featured guest musician Bruce Franklin (Trouble) on guitar and backing vocals on several tracks on the 2015 release. Paul Rau played keyboards on the album but did not tour with the band at that time.

Lothar and Willie left SPILLAGE in 2015 to pursue other musical projects, and Billy McGuffey who was friends with several band members, joined on bass.  SPILLAGE was scheduled to play the Maryland Doomfest in 2016, and through connected circles, Tony offered Elvin Rodriguez (a singer from the Philadelphia area) an opportunity to learn their songs and audition for the band. Elvin basically had his audition during the Doomfest, quickly learning their songs prior to taking the stage, and effortlessly performed to a thrilled audience! Needless to say, Elvin became the new singer for SPILLAGE and the band lineup remains unchanged. In January 2019, SPILLAGE released their 2nd album, "Blood of Angels", which was well-received worldwide.

As the world faced the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, SPILLAGE continued to forge ahead writing epic new songs for their 3rd album "Electric Exorcist" which showcased a more mature, developed, and collaborative songwriting process while continuing to develop their evolving SPILLAGE style. Despite their plans to tour in Europe being cancelled due to travel restrictions during the pandemic, SPILLAGE successfully released Electric Exorcist in late October 2021 and they hit the ground running, bringing their fun and energetic performances to fans locally at the end of 2021 and made appearances in several US festivals and shows during the summer of 2022. SPILLAGE recorded their performance during RIFF FEST in July 2022, and their new SPILLAGE Live! Digipak became available March 31, 2023 to appease fans until their 4th album is scheduled to be released on September 8, 2023 (CD/Digital formats, Vinyl in Nov 2023) in celebration of ten years of SPILLAGE!

Scandinavian power quartet LEACH is closing in for a kill with a masterpiece of – quite literally – punching thrash/death'n'roll. As a first harbinger of the upcoming album New Model Of Disbelief, the band has just delivered their brand new video single Gone To Waste. Kicking it off with a crushing main riff and frantically aggressive vocals by singer/guitarist Markus Wikander, the single manages to move on to its rich, touching chorus in an almost seamless fashion. However, the truly unexpected star of this blood fest is a very old-school melodic metal epilogue that can easily get you to indulge in awesome flashbacks – if you’ve been a metalhead for a while. LEACH themselves describe this piece of northern perfection in much simpler words: “A good sum up of what we’re all about. KITSA is a rousing heavy rock act hailing from the salted aura of Port Orchard, Washington. Launched in 2022, the band's music is deeply rooted in weighty riffs, spanning various genres over several decades, with a deep nod to Pacific Northwest grunge.

With Elder, The Sword, Down, Alice In Chains, and Nazareth cited as some of their influences, the foursome of  KITSA comprises members from eclectic bands, including Devilbilt, YEDD, Teepee Creeper, Pivot Point, Earthwreck, and Abused. In April 2023, KITSA released three incendiary live demo tracks recorded by Jeremy Deede and Tony Reed at Devils Child Records.

Later in 2023, the band set out to record their full-length debut, 'Dead by Dawn.'  A melting pot of musical forces, the record features an assortment of sweet, sweeping vocal harmonies on the title track "Dead by Dawn," the live fan favorite "Journeyman," and a classic rock banger "Seeds of Famine." Dead by Dawn is transcended by hard-hitting muscled tracks like "She" and "Hate."

Beyond Shadows is a two-man formation from New York, United States of America, and they play melodic death metal in the classic way, namely Gothenburg style. However, they are announced in the promotional brochure as a Swedish band from Göthenburg, anyone who can understand. In any case, it took me a few minutes to figure out this joke. They're rascals, those promo guys. The two gentlemen do everything themselves, so they release this self-titled album independently and do this with the help of some flashy, colored artwork and of course with a hell of a production: none other than Fredrik Nordström from the Fredman studio was at the controls. You just have to get it done. By the way, the YouTube video below is not of a song from the new album, but shows some older work that fits perfectly with the current sound.

Does it sound like Swedish melodic death metal? Sure, it would be a shame if that weren't the case. Production-wise it's rock solid. But for my taste there is just a bit too much bass and it sounds a bit too slick and clean. Don't whine, my grandfather would say, just listen. I do that with pleasure because David's throat rattle is pleasant to hear. Musically speaking, you can't notice much or anything about this Beyond Shadows , nor should you complain about the song structures because a lot of thought has been given to that too. How about brutal rolling drum violence, screeching and flashing solos, twin leads to die for... you name it and it will be covered.

But what does all this add to the genre? A genre that has its grandmasters who are still more than active and who, let's face it, often do better than their little brothers. Beyond Shadows adds the following to this genre: fury and aggression (listen to the opening track: Where No Sorrow Follows or the successor Plight Of The Hunter ) and finesse and astuteness (hear it in  My Anger of My Love , which lasts no less than nine minutes). lasts), but there is also just solidity (with The March Goes On or Beyond Shadows as examples).

Anyone who wants to add to their collection of melodic death metal can swipe their bank card without blinking, you won't be bored with these Beyond Shadows .

Based in Wales, UK, Death Pigeon offers the classic combination of death-ish Metal, gore, horror, and…symphony? Sure; why not? Oddly, the band doesn’t mention the orchestral elements in their music, but they absolutely play an integral part in ‘Part 2: The Rewiring of Humanity.’ I’m sure they are the product of some laptop wizardry as opposed to enlisting the London Philharmonic, but nonetheless, the symphonic interludes are quite lovely, just the same. 

On the Metal end of things, songs are relatively standard fare. Guitars that relentlessly sprag and chug, guttural vocals, rudimentary lyrics, and generally unwavering tempos. It’s not toooo bad, but it certainly doesn’t pierce the jugular like the imagery would indicate. Sandwich this with the outstanding Classical accompaniment, and it is (paraphrasing Poe) “a niche within a niche”. In other words, I don’t really know what the target audience is here. It feels like two moderately gifted artists are at a compromise.

Incidentally, there is an instrumental version of the album (Vol. 2A), which is superior if I’m being honest. Not a slight against the vocals or lyrics, but let’s just say Death Pigeon may work better as an instrumental band. That being said, give it a cursory spin. Maybe you’re in that magic circle of enlightenment.
